The tempo map
Every style sits at its tempo, slow on the left. Click a name to load it, even while it plays; arrow keys step through them in tempo order. The ruler jumps from 146 to 165 BPM, marked //. Blank (dashed) is an empty bar with a plain kit, to start from nothing. On a phone the styles are a list, slow to fast.
The ring
The pattern drawn as a clock: one ring per row, kick in the middle, chord outside, one dot per step. Bigger dots are accents, arcs are held notes, the light wedge is the playhead. In the centre: the sound as a wave, and the tempo.
The style card
- Variations
- Other patterns of the same style, A to E. Press V for the next one.
- Try this
- One change to hear. Filled while it is on; press it again to undo.
Play, presets, live moves
- Play, BPM, Key
- Under the ring: start and stop, the tempo, and the key, which moves the bass and chords together (all minor).
- Hold · Echo
- While held, everything but the kick goes into the echo; let go and the tail rings out.
- Hold · Fill
- While held, a snare roll that builds.
- FX screen
- While Echo or Fill is held, or while you move the tempo or most Sound controls, a small screen slides in with a pixel animation of what that effect does. There are three for each, 78 in all, picked at random each time it appears. Animations on / off, next to the Sound and Bass line tabs (or the A key), turns it off; the sound is not affected.
- Mutate
- Flips a few drum steps and maybe one bass note. Never the kick.
- Reset
- The variation as written, mutes and solos off. Greyed out when there is nothing to undo.
- Presets 1 to 4
- Click an empty preset to save the whole pattern there. Saved presets are filled; the active one, last saved or loaded, has a play mark ▸ before its name and says edited once you change something (click it to go back to what you saved). × clears a preset. Kept in this browser only.
The grid
Eight rows, sixteen steps: one bar, four beats of four. Each row has four buttons: M mute, S solo, FX sends the row into the echo and reverb, and the lock keeps the row as it is when you change style. Click a row name to mute it too, or press 1 to 8. On a phone the grid shows half a bar at a time: Steps 1-8 or Steps 9-16, and Follow keeps up with the playhead.
- Off
- On
- Accent: louder
- First step of a beat
- Held: the note before rings on
- Slide into the next note
- Drums and chord
- Click a step: off, on, accent, off.
- Bass
- Click a step: on or off. A new note uses the last note picked in the Bass line tab, shown in the step.
- Holding a note
- Bass and chord notes can ring over several steps. Drag a note to the right to hold it, back to shorten it; or Shift-click a later step to hold the note before it up to there. Clicking a held step starts a new note there.
Bass line
The bass as notes, from the key's root (underlined) up an octave; black keys are shown filled. Click to place or move a note, click it again to remove it. Accent makes a note louder and brighter; Slide glides it into the next note, the acid trick.
Sound
A front panel of knobs. Drag a knob up or down (or focus it and use the arrow keys, Shift for bigger steps); double-click puts back the style's value. The Drums row tunes and shortens the kick, snare, hats and clap; the Tone row shapes the bass, the chord and the space (echo feedback and level, reverb). The menus below pick the sounds: kick, perc, bass and chord, the voicing and the echo time (a 16th to two bars). Kick sound swaps the style's kick for a punchy, booming, soft or hard one. Master on the right holds the DJ filter, drive, sidechain (duck), swing and the tape hiss level.
- Swing
- How late every other 16th falls: 0% is straight, around 50% skips like UK garage.
- DJ filter
- Turn it left of centre for a darker sound, right for a thinner one. Off opens it; with Spring back on it returns to the centre when you let go, like holding a filter on a mixer.
- Drive
- Warms and squashes the whole mix.
- Sidechain
- Everything but the kick dips on each kick step and swells back, so the groove pumps. To hear it, load Trance B (one long pad), solo the Chord row and move Sidechain between off and 100%. It follows the kick row even when the kick is muted.
